Suryakumar Yadav Backs Abhishek Sharma
Ahmedabad, February 21, 2026 – India captain Suryakumar Yadav has offered resolute support to opener Abhishek Sharma, who has registered three successive ducks in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, while delivering a pointed message to rival teams ahead of Sunday’s crucial Super Eights encounter against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
India remain unbeaten after four commanding group-stage victories, as do South Africa. The fixture marks a high-stakes rematch of the 2024 final, which India won, and follows a recent bilateral series in which South Africa were defeated 3-1 on Indian soil.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Saturday, Suryakumar dismissed any concerns surrounding Abhishek’s form and highlighted the 24-year-old’s enduring quality as the world’s number-one ranked T20I batsman.
“The people who are worried about Abhishek’s form, I worry for them,” Suryakumar stated. “I am actually worried about the teams he is going to play against in the future once his runs start flowing. The team needs him to play with his unique identity, and he is trying to do just that. Whether it comes off or not, we are here to cover for him. Last year, he covered everything for us; this time, we will do it for him.”
Depth and Adaptability Define India’s Approach
With six left-handers in the top eight, India have consistently posted 40-50 runs in the powerplay, a figure Suryakumar described as normal on the surfaces encountered thus far. He acknowledged that expectations remain high—drawing from strong bilateral performances—but noted the four wickets played on in the tournament have been somewhat challenging.
The captain confirmed there would be no immediate change in batting order, effectively ruling out the inclusion of right-hander Sanju Samson for variety at this stage.
On Tilak Varma, who has faced questions over strike rate at number three, Suryakumar provided a clear tactical explanation: “If one wicket falls early, he has the freedom to play his natural game in the powerplay. But if we lose two quick wickets, he has to take a back seat, build a partnership to the 10th over, and let our firepower take over later. I have zero concerns. He has delivered brilliantly for India at No. 3, and I am confident he will only get better.”
Prepared for Any Conditions and Embracing Home Pressure
Suryakumar emphasised the squad’s extensive experience from franchise and domestic cricket, enabling seamless adaptation against both off-spinners and left-arm orthodox bowlers. “We are ready to adapt to any sort of wicket,” he said. “Our batters are well equipped. Everyone has a tailored game plan, and what’s working for us right now is that we’ve won four games.”
Addressing the unique demands of a home World Cup, the skipper candidly admitted the inescapable pressure from passionate fans. “It’s very difficult to claim there’s no pressure. When you play a major event on home soil, the pressure is inescapable. Every individual handles it differently, but we are trying our best to stay present and keep things simple. Ultimately, there will be pressure—if there wasn’t, playing wouldn’t be any fun.”
The India–South Africa Super Eights match is scheduled for Sunday, 22 February 2026, at 7:00 PM IST at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams enter the contest in excellent form, promising a contest defined by composure, execution under pressure, and the ability to seize key moments.
